The Fourth of July is often a day for public officials to deliver speeches on liberty and freedom. Ask your participants: What does freedom mean to you? Read the lyrics to the song "America the Beautiful." Talk about the meaning of the lyrics. Challenge your history buffs to guess who delivered the following speeches.

How are the different people in your family related? Where do you fit in the family? Challenge your group to name the family connection based on the following assumption: You are one of two married daughters with a father and mother.

He was a runner-up for the Person of the Century. The Roosevelts dominated American politics for 12 years. Talk about FDR's presidential legacy. Define legacy. What factors affect a president's legacy? How do historians evaluate a past president? Did FDR leave a strong presidential legacy?

Millions of Americans have German heritage. Read about Ronald Reagan's proclamation of the first German-American Heritage Day on October 6, 1983. Share ways to celebrate German heritage (e.g., chat about famous German-Americans such as Levi Strauss, Henry Kissinger, and Marlene Dietrich). Then challenge your group to a German trivia quiz.

For some people, gift-giving is a way of life instead of a once-in-awhile activity. Have you ever experienced the joy of generous giving? The holiday season is the perfect time to talk about the concept of philanthropy with your group. Ask: How do acts of generosity inspire philanthropy? Is philanthropy more than giving money away?  What are the things that motivate sacrificial giving? Talk about famous past philanthropists who gave away enormous amounts of money, time, or assets to promote the public welfare. Some names are suggested below.

COLLECTIBLES: VINTAGE TOYS QUIZ
(December 2005)

The hobby of collecting has become very popular in recent years. Ask your participants if any of them are collectors. Just about anything can become a collectible, from dolls to autographs to seashells. Talk about places to find collectibles, such as antique shops, auctions, or flea markets. What about arranging, displaying, or mounting your collection? For a bit of nostalgic fun with your group, try this toy-collecting activity. Write the following letters and blanks on the board and ask participants to name the vintage toy in each one. If possible, show an example of the toy and ask your group to share any special memories they have of the object.
