Cindy Cordrey is a Board-Certified Music Therapist who has
worked with various special needs populations since 1982. In 1987, she became
a music therapy consultant for an Alzheimer's adult day treatment facility
in Wilmington, Delaware, where she currently is employed. Cindy also conducts
workshops for local caregiver support groups. Cindy is the author of Hidden
Treasures. Nancy Dezan is a social worker who has spent the past 25 years
working with individuals and their families who are struggling with Alzheimer's
disease and related dementias. For many years, Nancy served as the executive
director of two different adult day health programs for individuals with dementia.
As an advocate for those with Alzheimer's disease, Nancy has provided countless
presentations at workshops and conferences across the United States. She has
also designed and authored many therapeutic reminiscing products for activity
staff working with older adults in long-term care. Currently, Nancy is the
Education Manager for the Alzheimer's Association of the National Capital
Area. Nancy is the author of Barbers, Cars, and Cigars; Yesterdays; and the
You Be the Judge series.
Katherine Groff-Smith, who holds a Bachelor of Science in
Education, is a cofounder and former president of Buffalo's Northside Writer's
Group. She has traveled to Hawaii, Hungary, Slovakia, and throughout the Carribean.
Katherine is the author, with Virginia Kelley, of Travel Unlimited.
Lynn Hawkins holds a bachelor's degree in home economics
and a California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential in
homemaking and creative activities. Lynn has taught creative activities in
convalescent hospitals and senior centers for 24 years as an instructor for
the Bakersfield Adult School. Lynn is the author of Crafts Through the Year
and Crafts for the Holidays.
Beckie Karras is a board-certified music therapist who specialized
in gerontology. She worked for many years as an activities coordinator and
music therapist in Maryland nursing homes and as a contract music therapist
to nursing homes, adult day care centers, and retirement facilities in the
Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Beckie wrote Down Memory Lane, the company's
first book, and has since written a dozen others, including Trivia Treasury,
Roses in December, and the second edition of Down Memory Lane.
Virginia L. Kelley designed and produced costumes for opera
in the Buffalo, New York, area for 18 years while also working as an activities
director. She has over 75 shows to her credit. Most had casts of more than
40 and all required multiple, extensive period costumes. She designed and
constructed costumes for the 1977 bicentennial world premiere of an opera
by Anton Wolf, titled "Madame Jumel." She received mention in Opera
News for a December 1990 production of "Amahl and the Night Visitors"
by Gian Carlo Menotti. Ms. Kelley has consistently found ways to integrate
her two careers by bringing activities utilizing costumes, drama, and music
to nursing and retirement homes, and by creating opportunities for residents
to see and, occasionally, to assist backstage with costumes on her productions.
Virginia is the author of Party Possibilities, Drama A to Z, and coauthor,
with Katherine Groff-Smith, of Travel Unlimited.
Sandy Minor holds a bachelor of fine arts degree from the
University of Nebraska, with additional training in the School of Occupational
Therapy at the University of Wisconsin. Before her retirement, she was employed
as activity director for a group of community-based residential facilities
in the Madison, Wisconsin area. In 2000, she moved to Salida, Colorado and
has continued to be actively involved with seniors, through leadership of
the senior's group in her church and assisting with Sunday services at the
Columbine Nursing Home in Salida. Sandy is the author of Holiday Mind Joggers
and the three Mind Joggers volumes.
Teresa Sumrall received her Bachelor of Science degree in
Therapeutic Recreation from Columbus State University, Columbus, Georgia.
She has worked for Leon County Adult and Community Edution for the past 12
years. She lives in Tallahassee, Florida, with her husband and two cats. Teresa
is the author of What Do You Know? and What More Do You Know? After having
worked in the activity field for over 15 years, Cindy Van Dusen has earned
her degree in "providing love and care for the elderly," majoring
in "lots of fun" and minoring in "lots more fun!" Throughout
her career in the activity field, she has come to realize that the elderly
love and crave a challenge. Cindy has created and will continue to create
games that consistently stimulate the senior mind, helping seniors to see
their continuing potential. Cindy is the author of Make Your Point! and Quizmania,
as well as the originator of the slogan "You Can't Bloom in Your Room."
Dace Teegardin is a 20-year veteran nurse who has specialized
in geriatrics. She has worked with geriatric and Alzheimer's residents in
hospitals, nursing homes, and in-home situations in Michigan and Florida.
She is currently working with Alzheimer's residents at the Plantation Key
Comprehensive Care Center in the Florida Keys. Dace is the author of Remembering,
Remembering Our Town, and Remembering Travel in America. She has also authored
a novel, Seven Moorings.
Jean Vetter is a regular writer for A New Day: The Magazine for Activity Professionals. Her short stories and articles have appeared in Catholic Digest, Messenger of the Sacred Heart, Sisters Today, Woman's Household, The Buffalo News, Arts in Buffalo, The Buffalo Journal, House of White Birches, Plastic Canvas, and Highlights for Children. She was the first prize winner of a short story contest sponsored by Silhouette Books, which earned her a weekend at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City with her husband Bob. She loves taking care of her flower gardens and sewing quilts, and she enjoys decorating the doll houses that she and Bob design and build together. Jean is the author of both volumes of Skits for Seniors and of Heroes.
